Good Morning all OPSEU members,

OPSEU Local 330 has a signed Memorandum of Settlement.  We will be bringing this to you, the membership, for a ratification vote on Thursday, November 27 2008.

As was posted on our web site and stated in an earlier contact message we are going to try this Ratification Vote differently than we have in the past. Accommodating the membership as best we could, we have chosen 3 voting stations. From 3:30pm to 5:30pm, Collingwood Collegiate, Cookstown ES, and Orillia Regional Office will be available. Then from 6:45pm to 8:45pm, our OPSEU Local 330 Barrie Office will be opened. An information flyer will be posted at your worksite in the next day or so.

As you are aware, the monetary provisions were bargained earlier at the Provincial Discussions Table, which you ratified Sept 16 2008. Our role now was to bargain hard at the local level, and achieve an agreement regarding the distribution of the monies that was available in the PDT. The deadline for us to conclude successful negotiations was November 30th.  I believe we did the best we possibly could, and we left with a fair deal.

Also, for the first time ever we are going to make this Memorandum of Settlement, with the incorporated PDT language available on our web site, www.opseu330.com prior to the meeting.  It should be up by Monday afternoon.  Prior to becoming active, I often felt I did not have the time at the ratification vote to absorb the new language and to pose questions to the team.  I am hopeful you will take the time to read through the agreement and feel comfortable bringing your questions to your district voting station.  At least 2 bargaining team members will be available at each site, with all of them joining us for the central district vote at our local office at 6:45pm.

I am optimistic that we will have a good turn out.  It can be as simple as just dropping in and voting, or staying and asking your questions.

Remember, you are the U in union, make your vote count.

It was an interesting bargaining day; your team went into this round expecting to see some monetary pieces on the table.  That was not the case until the end of the day when we finally addressed one of our major demands around benefits.

The employer has had our full proposal from day one, but is barely addressing it.  Around 6pm our staff rep made reference to the conciliator we have on hand if we come to an impasse, I believe we might just be there.

The employer has made several comments around wanting consistency with the other employee groups within SCDSB, but when we make reference in our proposal around the “consistent” language with the other groups; they seem to be ignoring us.

It is far too long that we have been treated like the poor cousins with this employer, and we need to push back and make some strides.  Remember, this is a 4 year contract.  We are hopeful that we can meet some of your demands, we are a strong team and recognize this is a two way street, but the employer has to understand they are not bargaining with themselves.

Our next dates will be crucial, November 20, 21st and 25th.

Whatever the outcome, we will have a vote/or information night on November 27th. We are still planning a rotating ballot box idea,

Attached is some interesting data around Provincial comparators with respect to Educational Assistants and Office Clerical Staff, it puts things into perspective.

Keep watching the web site, we will send a detailed flyer to your work site by the end of the week.

Day 3: Today, we had some good discussions around how some of the language in the Collective Agreement causes hardships to the members and we are hopeful that changes will produce a win win for all over the next four years.

We have October 28th scheduled and we should be into some pretty heavy issues by then.  You have elected a very confident team and we understand how important this contract is for all members.

Remember, we are hopeful to have this agreement ratified by November 30th 2008; we are planning on having a travelling ballot box sometime during the weeks of November 17th to the 28th.  More information on the specific date will follow.

October 20, 2008

Day 2: We started negotiating on some of the language pieces. It is a slow process, however, we are feeling good about how the day ended, and looking forward to October 23 which will be day 3.

October 17, 2008

Day 1 was simply an exchange of our proposals and going through them, article by article.

October 2, 2008

Your bargaining team had our first training day in Orillia with OPSEU Staff Rep Judy Storey.

We are working through all of the demands and will have our Brief completed soon.  Next, we will co-ordinate bargaining dates with the employer.  First day of bargaining is when both sides pass their Brief. Watch this space for updates.
