Dear Brother/Sister:
I am pleased to inform you that Silvanna Petersen, a member of your Union has successfully completed a Union Referral Counsellor course jointly sponsored by the Canadian Labour Congress and United Way Canada.
The training that Silvanna has received is quite broad in scope and should provide her with the skills, knowledge and support to assist fellow workers in getting help when faced with problems of personal impact, which are not addressed through the collective agreement. She has been trained in substance abuse, stress, loss in relationships and several other areas.
Silvanna has also become a member of a Union Referral Counsellor network, which will keep her updated on significant changes within the "help" community.
The reason I am writing you is to ask for your cooperation in helping Silvanna operate as a Union Referral Counsellor in the workplace by incorporating the concept of Union Referral Counsellor into your bylaws.
With the availability of a trained Union Referral Counsellor your members will have at their disposal one more valuable union service. In addition union officers and stewards will be able to refer members who need help to the Counsellor, secure in the knowledge that this person has the expertise and access to support and resources required to deal with the needs of the member. This will allow officers and stewards to concentrate on their duties.
If you require any additional information please feel free to contact me.
In solidarity,
Marline Fournier
Manager, Labour Services
