SAFETY: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN
With the amendment to the safe schools act it was timely that in a discussion with members at a recent unit meeting the issue of school safety was very much in the forefront.

Members are very concerned about the lack of consistent procedures at our worksites to ensure the safety of all bodies present. There is a strong feeling that protocol needs to be developed and delivered by administrators at all sites following guidelines to ensure that all sites maintain
the same level of security.
  GREENING OPSEU
OPSEU has joined the worldwide community to endorse “Earth Hour.” On March 6, OPSEU’s Executive Board passed an Earth Hour motion to take action. As part of the commitment to run a greener organization, OPSEU will turn off all the lights within the union’s control in its 20 Ontario offices for one hour at 8:00 p.m., Saturday March 29, 2008.

ALL IN A DAY'S WORK
The job fact committee, Silvanna Petersen, Dave McCarl and Sandy Barker, met with Human Resources officers to determine which OPSEU members would be asked to complete the mutually agreed upon format of the job fact sheets. The data from these forms, and the forms from managers will be compiled after the April 4/2008 deadline for submission, and the information will more accurately reflect the roles we are fulfilling within the SCDSB.
  INCLEMENT WEATHER
If you are having trouble getting to school on a day where weather is an issue-i.e. buses have been cancelled-you must let your supervisor know when you expect to arrive at your workplace.

If you have to dig yourself out of your driveway, get stuck in a ditch and need to get towed, or if the roads haven’t been cleared and you arrive within 3hours of your normal start time you will not be deducted sick time and will receive your regular pay. If you arrive 4hours into the day you will only be paid for the hours you are at work, anything over 3 hours will be deducted from your sick leave allowance .
